About The Film

Are you a horror fan who likes ghost stories, but wants more than jump scares and creepy imagery? Then the unique story of Llorona will appeal to you. The short film we are creating will be told through compelling visuals, and dialog in both English and Spanish. The original story of La Llorona, which comes from Latin-American folklore, tells the tale of a grief stricken woman who ended up drowning her own children and killing herself. Writer and director Ander Barillas has created a new take on the ghost story, weaving it into a tale of loss, family drama and his own take on the afterlife. In this take of the story, hearing Llorona sing means she is coming for your children soon. That is the threat single mother Estrella and her daughter Bella face, when they move in with Estrella’s father Abuelo, who has recently become a widow. The two try to adjust to living with Estrella’s father, while still mourning the loss of Estrella’s mother Abuela. When the two hear “La Llorona” sung in the middle of the night, Bella goes to figure out where the sound is coming from while Estrella searches for her daughter. The event will test Estrella’s faith and make her question whether ghosts are real, or just a part of scary childhood stories. We hope that this film will unite people from different cultures with our universal themes.
